This PR is a proposal to close #1605 by applying the original commit by @gregoa with additional credits to @mestia as co-author.
Despite GitHub says “Maintainers are allowed to edit this pull request” on the original pull request, it refuses to allow me to update that accordingly. Hence I decided to re-apply the same agreed-upon changes via a separate pull request.
