Several keyboard layouts upon installation

I am RU/EN user and after using archinstall I still needed to choose keyboard layouts that I am gonna use, because apparently there is no such feature inside installer. Why not to make it automatically via the installer?

Layouts are a hot mess in Linux and has always been the case.

First of all, Grub only supports 1-127 range for example.

So Latin layouts would work but RU layout would render Grub broken (say you had an encryption pw). Other latin layout would work: provided you do not use language specific characters: ù, è, à, ç, ñ

I used to have to use for French layout ckbcomp to generate layout files for my /boot grub cfg

And hopefully this is not the case anymore using the vconsole.conf hook see here Which is actually causing an issue in the installer currently. MkinitcpioV40 Which means installer would need to set this BEFORE the first _base pacstrap.

Seems like wizards finally decided that layouts should be handled properly through one hook (sd-vconsole instead of a separate keymap hook) if I understand correctly.

Past that point it is up to your Login-manager and DE:

For example SDDM correctly handles this through:

mkdir -p "/usr/share/sddm/scripts/"
cat >> /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup << EOF
setxkbmap "$KB_LAYOUT"
EOF

chmod +x /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup

And in plasma: You can obviously setup several layouts and switch.

Most of this is shared through the package called xkeyboard-config which provides the symbols in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols.

For your use-case I would recommend sticking to US during installation and adding RU inside Login-manager/DE if using one.

Yes this is what I did but was a bit confused because there are no graphical settings in plasma wayland for this as I understand, so I did it via localectl command, it was written here that it is for x11 so I thought it will not work on wayland (it worked correctly). Still it was a lot of brainwork for me and it is sad because I need to configure as many things as possible through installation.
