Great solution with the refactored cleanup methods!

I had submitted a simpler inline fix that mirrors the existing release_date handling (line 2657-2659).

While my approach is minimal, your refactoring makes future PurlDB normalizations much cleaner. Is refactoring the preferred direction here, or should we maintain the inline pattern for consistency?
